General Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the PhD program at IISER Bhopal, applicants must meet the following general criteria:
Qualifying Degree
Applicants must hold one of the following:
- Master’s or equivalent degree in Engineering/Technology
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology
- Master’s or equivalent degree in Science
- Master’s or equivalent degree in Arts/Commerce (or allied subjects)
For those with a qualifying degree listed under points 2, 3, and 4, one of the following additional requirements must also be fulfilled:
- Valid GATE score
- Selection through National Eligibility Test – UGC NET /CSIR/NBHM, etc.
- Selection through a National-level examination conducted by MHRD or its agencies/Institutions
- Selected provisionally for the DST-INSPIRE Fellowship
- Candidates with a B.Tech. from IITs or BS-MS from IISERs with CGPA/CPI more than 8.0 on a 10-point scale are also eligible.
Marks/CGPA/CPI requirement in Qualifying Degrees
Applicants must meet the following requirements for their qualifying degrees:
1. Minimum of 60% marks or CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10-point scale (overall percentage/CGPA/CPI; not just in the major subject).
2. Relaxation of 10% of marks is allowed for SC/ST/PWD categories and 5% for OBC-NCL/EWS.
Age Limit
Applicants should preferably be not more than 28 years old, with a 3-year age relaxation for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and 5 years for SC/ST/PD/Female applicants. The upper age limit is determined as of the last date of online application submission.
Fellowship Opportunities
All selected candidates will be eligible to receive a JRF fellowship as per the funding agency/Institute norms.
Selection Procedure
Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview, with the date communicated via email and posted on the Institute website. SC/ST candidates appearing for the interview will receive TA as per Government of India norms.

- Applicants currently in the final examinations of their qualifying degree program can apply, but admission is conditional upon meeting the defined marks criteria before joining the Institute.
- The selection process is based on interviews of shortlisted candidates.
- Relaxation of eligibility criteria for reserved categories follows Government of India norms.
- Applying does not guarantee shortlisting for an interview. Departments may use additional criteria for shortlisting based on academic performance or national-level test results.
- Students awaiting results for various fellowships may apply with their roll numbers and walk-in for the interview once they qualify.
Results
After the application deadline, all applications will be screened, and the list of candidates shortlisted for interviews will be available on the Institute’s website. Shortlisted candidates will receive notifications via email.
