Academic Transcript vs Mark Sheets

academic-transcript-vs-mark-sheets

What is an Academic transcript?

An academic transcript is an official document that provides a detailed record of a student’s academic performance in a given program (Bachelor/Master) from an institution (University). It typically includes a list of all courses taken, grades earned, credit hours completed, and other relevant academic information, such as the date of graduation and any honours or awards received.

What is a Mark Sheet?

In contrast, a mark sheet is a document that lists only the grades or marks given to a student in a particular course or semester. It is usually issued at the end of each semester or academic year and provides a summary of a student’s performance in that period only.

The key difference between an Academic transcript and a Mark sheet

The key difference between an academic transcript and a mark sheet is that an academic transcript is a comprehensive record of a student’s entire academic history from a particular institute or university, while a mark sheet provides information on a specific semester or academic year. An academic transcript is usually required for admission to higher study programs, employment, or professional certification, while a mark sheet may be used primarily for record-keeping purposes.

Process of applying for an Academic transcript

To obtain an academic transcript, a student must usually request it from their institution’s registrar’s office or examination cell. The process may involve filling out a form, paying a fee, and providing identification or other supporting documents. This process can take 15 days to 30 days depending on University. The transcript may be sent directly to the requesting party or mailed to the student, depending on the institution’s policies.

PhD in India vs. PhD in Abroad, the key differences.

Why is an Academic transcript important?

If you are planning to pursue higher education abroad (whether it be a Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or Internship), it is crucial to obtain an Academic Transcript. While a few universities may accept a combined file of the semester or yearly results, most of the abroad universities require an Academic Transcript. In some Indian universities, an Academic Transcript is automatically provided along with the final semester result and certificate without a formal application, but in other cases, you will need to apply for it. As mentioned earlier, this process typically takes between 15 to 30 days, so it is advisable to apply for the transcript soon after completing your graduation to avoid any inconvenience in the event of an emergency.
